CHCCS Vaccination Campaign Reaches Hundreds of Staff
In the February 26 “Community Update” sent to CHCCS staff and families, Superintendent Dr. Nyah Hamlett announced, “I am pleased to report that our community partners have stepped up in a major way. This afternoon, our own Smith Middle School served as a point of distribution for over 250 first dose Moderna vaccines supplied by our friends at Alignment Healthcare. We will continue working to make sure that every staff member who wants to be vaccinated will have that opportunity.”

Smith MS Students Create Podcasts
To celebrate Black History Month, students at Smith Middle School (SMS) created podcasts celebrating Black musicians and their impact on music history. This project, designed by SMS Band and Orchestra Teacher, Robin Neville, allowed students to combine their creativity with their writing and research skills. “I like for my students to be able to do something substantial and something music-related, but usually something that doesn’t involve playing their instrument,” Neville said.

Nuestra Cocina Blends Culture and Cooking
In September 2020, the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) offered the first “Nuestra Cocina” for CHCCS families and staff. The online event was in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and it was designed by the Latinx members of OEI as they invited participants into their own kitchens to introduce them to authentic Hispanic cuisine as a way to honor a rich culture. More than 40 people attended the inaugural “Nuestra Cocina,” or “in our kitchen.”

CHCCS Salutes and Thanks Our School Social Workers
One of the strengths and priorities within Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is the commitment to providing student support staff at many levels in every elementary, middle and high school. Each school is blessed with a full-time School Social Worker, a luxury few North Carolina districts can claim. The week of March 8-12 is our time to celebrate and honor the 23 School Social Workers who so often serve as the glue within a school community-- and at no time, has this been more evident than since the pandemic began.
