  • CHCCS Students Sharpen Japanese Speaking Skills in Contest

    Every year, CHCCS Japanese Teacher, Yoshimi Aoyagi, directs an in-school speech contest for her 103 students at Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School. The contest took place at both schools on February 19, with the top contestants from each level advancing to the North Carolina Japanese Speech Contest on March 7.

  • Former Estes Hills Student Returns as Guest Author

    On Valentine’s Day, first grade students in Cathy Chianese’s class at Estes Hills Elementary School received an extra surprise and holiday treat when their guest reader, Abriana Johnson, introduced them to her mini-horse, Encore.

  • Ephesus Elementary Celebrates Black History Month through Music

    Ephesus Elementary School has built four weeks of commemorating Black History Month with a focus on the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” One of the highlights was a full day of activities with author Kelly Starling Lyons, whose picture book “Sing a Song” tells the history of the famous African American composition.

  • FPGB Students Connect with Author Vanessa Brantley-Newton

    CHCCS Mariposas, a Latinx student group made up of students in grades 2-12, and CLASS (an African-descendant student group at Frank Porter Graham Bilingüe FPGB) had the opportunity to meet acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator Vanessa Brantley-Newton at Flyleaf Books on January 21.

  • UNC Athletes Read Like Champions

    Wednesday, February 5 was World Read Aloud Day 2020, so it was a perfect date to hold the third annual Read Like a Champion celebration of literacy, presented by Duke Energy and UNC Student-Athlete Development.
