2020-21 CHCCS Remote Learning Device Program
As we prepare for the 2020-21 school year in remote learning, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools wants to ensure all students have access to the newest district technology devices and internet connectivity that are currently in our schools. To accomplish this goal, each school will host a drive-up collection and distribution events starting on August 10th (Elementary) or August 14th (Middle and High School) following district health and safety protocols all current Chromebooks, iPads, hotspots, chargers and library books we provided between Fall 2019 and Summer 2020 and distribute the following:
- Kindergarten and 1st grade - Apple iPad
- 2nd-5th grade - Lenovo N23 or Lenovo 100e Chromebook
- 6th-12th grade - Lenovo 500e flip/touch/tablet Chromebook with a writing stylus
- T-Mobile internet hotspots with unlimited data (1 hotspot per 2 CHCCS students in a household)
- Other school or district remote learning materials
- Pre-K students will receive iPads and additional learning materials closer to the start of the first Pre-K school day (August 31).
The dates of our distribution events will be:
- Elementary (Kindergarten through 5th grade)
- Week of August 10-14 -- Your child’s school will share exact dates/times
- Middle and High School (6th through 12th grade)
- August 14 - 19 - 6th grade, New to district students and students needing Mifis
- August 17 - Returning students with last names beginning with A-L
- August 18 - Returning students with last names beginning with M-Z
- August 19 - Make up date for any remaining students
If you currently have a district device, you should turn it into the school your child will attend this school year. It is an expectation that all students and/or their family members pick up a district-provided device, so we can best support and manage your child’s technology-based learning experiences. While we understand that high school students may need to use a personal PC or Mac if taking a college course, all in-district courses will use the Lenovo 500e Chromebook to take advantage of all of the new touch, tablet and stylus features.
Prior to Pickup
Prior to pickup and to ensure a faster pickup experience, we ask that you complete a two-step process to learn about and agree to our 2020-2021 device care expectations.
Step 1 - Review the 1:1 Student Chromebook Program Handbook (translated in multiple languages) with your child. This handbook provides information and expectations regarding device care during the take-home program.
Step 2 - Review and digitally sign the online 1:1 Student Program Parent and Student form for each of your children. If needed, a paper form will be available for you to sign during the school-based events.
Please know that, while there are no fees required to participate in the CHCCS 1:1 Program, we do ask that parents/guardians help students take care of their devices and associated materials throughout the year.
Be on the look-out for a follow-up email and/or phone communication from your child’s school this week that will include the exact times, location, and other details for their collection and distribution event. Laptop Distribution Details
Prior to device pick-up, we ask that you complete a two-step process:
Step 1 - Review the 1:1 Student Chromebook Program Handbook For Secondary Schools (English) with your child. This handbook provides information and expectations regarding our program and device care at home and school.
Step 2 - Review and sign the online 1:1 Student Chromebook Program Parent and Student form with your child. Please complete one form per child. If you are unable to complete this online, you may fill it out at the event OR print and turn in a signed copy to the school library. If you need a paper-based form, you can access them below:
Use of Personal Devices During the 1:1 Chromebook Program
Every student will receive a district iPad (K-1st grade) or Chromebook (2nd-12th grades) that is optimized for all learning experiences. Students are expected to use the district-provided Chromebook and CTE devices for instructional purposes because they are configured with all the necessary applications, links and security settings for learning
Per Board Policy 4318, this program does not prohibit a student to bring their personal device to school. However, students will not have access to our district network in order to decrease security risks and increase network speed and student safety on our internal network.
How to reset a student CHCCS Google password
Student passwords were reset to each student's PowerSchool number to prepare for the beginning of the school year. Please follow these Student Password Reset directions before or after you receive a district Chromebook. If you do not know your Powerschool number, you can receive it at the High School distribution event or your school.
