Service Learning Now Optional
Posted by CHCCS on 3/23/2022 10:00:00 AMDUE TO A REVISION OF BOARD POLICY 3460, THE SERVICE LEARNING GRADUATION REQUIREMENT WAS DISCONTINUED FOR ALL SENIORS STARTING WITH THE CLASS OF 2022 (INCLUDING FUTURE CLASSES)
In February 2022, the CHCCS Board of Education approved a revision to Policy 3460: Graduation Requirements that removes the requirement for completion of 25 hours of service-learning hours. Service Learning is no longer *required* in any capacity. However, the district still strongly encourages students to engage in Service Learning on their own, if possible.
This decision to eliminate the requirement followed a full review of the program in order to increase equitable outcomes for all students. After discussions occurred with input from high school principals and the Curriculum Management Team, all agreed the Service Learning Program, as a graduation requirement, was a barrier to students receiving their high school diploma.
What is Service Learning?
-
Service Learning is a teaching-learning method that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. The purpose of Service Learning is to provide students with the opportunity to have a positive impact on our local community. Service Learning allows students to expand their horizons and foster meaningful relationships with others in their community.
