Hurricane Helene and Support for Western NC: A message from Supt. Nyah Hamlett, 9/30/24

  • By now, we are all aware of the devastation unfolding in western North Carolina, following the flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. A great number of you are personally impacted. Some of you have lived in those communities yourselves, have children in colleges there, parents who are working or retired, or a network of relatives and friends now struggling to access basic needs like food and water. We know the roots run deep and connections are strong between our CHCCS community and the western part of our state. Many of us are experiencing real anguish and grief, as well as a sense of helplessness as people try to contact loved ones without access to communications.

Following the guidance of state and local emergency managers, we want to share the following government and education-based resources that allow our community to provide support and assistance in the most helpful way possible at this time. There are many more ways that you may prefer to contribute, of course, and this is not a complete list:

Please know that CHCCS is committed to supporting our affected staff and families. Employees can always access our Employee Assistance Program services for free, 24-hour support for work, personal or family-related needs. Reach out to colleagues and others, and when possible, find ways to share resources and celebrate the extraordinary richness and history of our mountain communities.

If there’s more you’d like us to know so we can help spread the word, now or in the weeks ahead, please contact us at communications@chccs.k12.nc.us.

    Sincerely,

    Nyah D. Hamlett, Ed. D.
    Superintendent
